D'oh! The Simpsons Movie, the biggest box office DVD release of the week, easily topped the national DVD sales chart the week ended Dec. 23.
The 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment release was launched with a massive promotion with events in cities around the country. In New York City, the Empire State Building was turned “Simpsons” yellow. Also in New York, Bryant Park hosted an ice show, a 25-foot inflatable Homer hand and 2,500 mega-donut balloons.
The Simpsons Movie was followed on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart by the previous week's two big releases, Warner Home Video's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at No. 2 and Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Bourne Ultimatum at No. 3, each down a notch from their debut week.
The Simpsons Movie also debuted at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine's rental chart with $12.9 million. Bourne, the previous week's top rental, moved to the second spot, generating $12.8 million in rental revenue, nearly as much as it did its first week in stores.
Most of the other big summer theatricals released earlier in the quarter continued to generate strong sales in the final week before Christmas, including Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, No. 4 on First Alert; Disney's Ratatouille, No. 8; and Paramount Home Entertainment/DreamWorks' Shrek the Third at No. 11.
