Showtime, IDT Flesh Out Horror8 Apr, 2005 By: Jessica Wolf
Anchor Bay Entertainment's upcoming “Masters of Horror” DVD series has yet to hit the market, but it's already gotten a shot in the arm from Showtime Networks.
The cabler has teamed up with Anchor Bay parent company IDT Entertainment and New Arc Entertainment to offer the series of horror films from the genre's most popular and successful directors on cable when the productions are finished.
The top names in horror are signed on for entries in “Masters of Horror.” Big names include Dario Argento, John Landis, Joe Dante, Roger Corman, Larry Cohen, John Carpenter, Mick Garris, George Romero, Don Coscarelli and Tobe Hooper.
There will be a minimum of 13 hour-long horror films to come for the series, some of which are already in production, said Ted Green, CEO of Anchor Bay, which will handle the video release.
Product should hit DVD by late this year or early next, he said.
IDT, Anchor Bay and the directors involved celebrated the series at a party in Hollywood two weeks ago. They joked and laughed and hobnobbed with each other, posing for pictures with some visiting “undead” on the red carpet.
There's a great sense of fun in the series, Green said. The budgets these directors are working with for the series are smaller than they're used to, he said.
“They're doing it as a labor of love,” Green said. “They're doing this because they like each other and wanted to work together. It's a genre they love and a genre they helped invent.”
The Showtime deal adds visibility and is the perfect showcase for the product, he said.
