Showtime Goes Mobile

9 Oct, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Cable TV's Showtime Networks Oct. 9 announced it would begin offering select programming to wireless mobile phone, pager, two-way radio, smartphone and PDA users equipped with 2.5G or 3G handsets.

Distributed via backend technology created by Mobile Streams, Showtime will make available clips and wallpaper from the series “Dexter” (with Michael C. Hall), Golden Globe winning “Weeds” (with Mary Louise Parker and Kevin Nealon) and sketch comedy “The Underground” starring Damon Wayans.

Content clips from “Sleeper Cell,” “The L Word” and “Showtime Championship Boxing” would be offered in the next few weeks.

“Mobile has become an increasingly important component of our overall program promotion and marketing campaigns,” said Robert Hayes, SVP and GM of digital media for Showtime. “It offers us an excellent subscriber acquisition and program sampling opportunity on the expanding mobile platform.”
