Report: Warner Working on Blu-ray, HD DVD Combo18 Sep, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Three engineers, including two reportedly from Warner Bros., in August revised a 2005 patent application for an optical disc they say will accommodate rival high-def formats Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD both on one side.
Wayne Smith, Alan Bell and Lewis Ostrover submitted U.S. Patent application #20060179448, which they said creates a disc that could be embedded with data 0.1 mm deep for Blu-ray and 0.6 mm for HD DVD. Content for a standard DVD could be embedded on the reverse side of the disc.
The slightly more expensive combo disc would be cheaper than purchasing three separate disc formats of the same movie and would allow retailers the luxury of not stocking three releases.
Warner Home Video Sept. 26 is slated to release The Lake House on HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and standard DVD simultaneously.
