Report: Niche Product to Grow With On Demand

3 Mar, 2008 By: Chris Tribbey

A new report from research firm Screen Digest predicts more niche titles will find a home in future on-demand markets, and online on-demand avenues will grow faster than in-store options, such as download-to-burn kiosks.

Long-tail, niche product deemed unworthy for DVD by rights holders will increasingly find life in the on-demand world, “On-demand Media: Re-inventing the Retail Business Model” concludes.

“The DVD business is approaching saturation point in key markets, with the release of thousands of new titles every year resulting in intense pressure on shelf space for brick-and-mortar retailers. Even for online retailers, the sheer volume of titles available is putting the supply chain under strain,” a summary of the report reads.

The on-demand market of both the United States and Europe is examined in the report, which looks at technological hurdles facing the industry and offers a genre-by-genre analysis of the market from both the rights holder and retailer perspectives. Catalog titles, not new releases, will dominate on-demand offers from the outset, the report finds.
