Report: IPTV Set-top Boxes to Top 8 Million This Year6 Jun, 2007 By: Chris Tribbey
Research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics announced June 6 that worldwide sales of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) set-top boxes will top nearly 8 million units by the end of 2007, a growth of more than 110% over last year. That translates into a booming market worth $1.3 billion, according to Strategy Analytics.
In addition, more IPTV set-box makers are taking HD into account, with Strategy Analytics predicting that more than 3 million HD-enabled units will be sold in Europe alone this year.
“In our view, any IPTV system that does not have, or is not planning for, HDTV upgrades will not be competitive in the long term,” said Peter King, head analyst for Strategy Analytics' connected home devices division, in a press release.
Strategy Analytics also reported that DVRs are gaining a stronger foothold with a global market share of 29%, compared to 15% in 2006, according to the press release.
“DVR functionality is also becoming an increasingly important competitive tool in the battle for new customers,” King added.
By 2012, Strategy Analytics forecasts that 33.5 million IPTV set-top boxes could be sold in the marketplace, if the current pace holds. The United States would only represent 13% of that market, with Asia (45%) and Europe (33%) holding the most IPTV set-top box customers, according to the report.
