Report: HD DVD Players Outsell Blu-ray in Europe

11 Jul, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

The European HD DVD Promotional Group said sales of HD DVD players have beaten rival standalone Blu-ray Disc players this year so far by a 3-to-1 ratio, according to a Reuters report.

The group claimed HD DVD has 74% market share in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Britain.

The data did not factor in sales of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 video game console, which features a Blu-ray drive.

Oliver Van Vieandal, a Toshiba spokesperson for the European HD DVD Group, told Reuters that margins for the HD DVD players were compatible for DVD players sold in Europe.

Steve Nickerson, SVP, market management for Warner Home Video, told Reuters that high prices for HD DVD players continued to impede greater consumer adoption.

“You can't get to mass-consumption until you get to mass-market pricing,” Nickerson said.
