Report: HD Driving Satellite Pay-TV12 Feb, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel
High-definition programming offered by subscription-based direct-to-home (DTH) satellite services will help the global market increase 7.6% annually through 2011, according to a new research report.
The study released by In-Stat, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based media research firm, said the global DTH subscriber base would top 129 million by 2011, with revenues exceeding $96 billion.
The report cited 273% satellite pay-TV subscriber growth in the United Kingdom from the third quarter of 2006 to third quarter of 2007.
“In more mature markets, growth rates, while slower [than developing countries], remain positive, being spurred by bundled and premium services such as HD,” said In-Stat analyst Michael Inouye. “HD is rapidly becoming a key differentiator in the U.S. and Western European countries like the U.K.”
