Report: DVR Market Reaching Maturity14 Jan, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel
TiVo Inc. remains the leading supplier as measured by total service subscribers.
Expanded use of the digital video recorder in Europe and Asia coupled with flattening unit shipments and revenues indicates a maturing market for the devices according to a new study.
In-Stat, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based research firm, said DVR unit shipments are projected to surpass 22.6 million units in 2008, up 15% from 19.6 million units in 2007.
The study found that the worldwide install base for DVRs was set to reach 44.6 million units at the end of 2007, compared to 33.9 million units at the end of 2006. Annual global DVR shipments should top 31.6 million units by 2011, according to the report.
DVR pioneer TiVo Inc. remains the leading supplier as measured by total service subscribers. Other device suppliers include satellite and cable companies Time Warner Cable, Comcast Communications, EchoStar and BskyB.
“Long-term prospects for the market remain bright, as strong demand from pay-TV service providers for [DVR]-enabled digital set top box products will sustain growth,” said In-Stat analyst Mike Paxton.
