Redbox, the DVD rental vending company owned by McDonald's Corp., announced it has begun testing its $1 rental kiosks in five Giant Eagle-owned GetGo convenience stores in the Pittsburgh area.
Locations include Shadyside, Lawrenceville, Sarver, Brentwood and Wilkinsburg.
Giant Eagle operates 146 corporate-owned (71 independent) supermarkets and 115 gas and convenience stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.
Redbox, which this summer bowed an online movie selection and payment system for its 1,800 kiosk locations, claims to have rented 25 million DVDs to date.
Last month, Houston-based competitor TNR Entertainment said it planned to enter Georgia by adding 170 rental kiosks to the greater Atlanta area.
TNR operates kiosks in Southeast Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Wisconsin and Colorado, and claims to serve about 1 million customers monthly through kiosks that carry 200 titles and 1,000 units.
