PS3 Sells Another Quarter Million in March

17 Apr, 2008 By: Chris Tribbey

Another quarter million Blu-ray Disc players were sold in March, in the form of the PlayStation 3, according to a U.S. video game industry report from The NPD Group.

“You'd never know that the U.S. economy was under distress by looking at the video games industry sales figures. Year-to-date growth is a rock-solid 27% through March 2008,” said NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier. “All platforms, aside from the [PlayStation 2], showed significant increases when compared with March 2007. The industry realized great growth last year and so far this year, that momentum is carrying through.”

The report also notes that subscription cards and points for Xbox Live's software download service were a hot selling item during the month of March. Sales of video game hardware, software and accessories are up 46% or more over the same period last year.

“The amazing year-over-year increase in software sales isn't just explained by a few top games — as compared to last March, twice as many SKU's achieved sales in excess of 100K units this month,” Frazier said.
