PS3 Firmware Update Enhances Blu-ray Features

18 Dec, 2007 By: Chris Tribbey

PlayStation 3 owners can now look forward to picture-in-picture and dual-audio features on their Blu-ray Discs, following a firmware update released by Sony Dec. 17.

The update also supports DivX and VC-1 (WMV) video streams on the gaming system.

The Blu-ray profile 1.1 update, which is now mandated for any new Blu-ray player released into the market, will give PS3 owners access to special features that will appear on Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Resident Evil: Extinction, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's Sunshine, as well as War and 3:10 to Yuma from Lionsgate.

Of the estimated 2.7 million Blu-ray players in the United States, roughly 2 million are PS3s, according to Sony.
