PlayStation 2 games swept all others for the top 10 video game rental titles for the first quarter, according to data released today by the Video Software Dealers Association VidTrac service. The top renter for Q1 was Grand Theft Auto 3, released last October.
The video game industry's major trade show, E3, takes place this week in Los Angeles.
Video games drove $201 in rental revenues in the first quarter of 2002, on more than 49 million rental transactions, according to VidTrac. Compared to the first quarter of 2001, video game rental revenue is up 9.2 percent. First-quarter 2002 video game rental revenue is up by more than 24 percent over fourth-quarter 2001 revenue, according to VidTrac.
PlayStation 2 games garnered 42.5 percent of total rental revenue market share, followed by PlayStation at 21.6 percent, Nintendo 64 at 18 percent, Xbox at 9 percent, GameCube at 4.5 percent, and “other” game platforms totaling 4.3 percent, according to the VSDA.
