Harry Potter is doing battle with Gladiator in the UK and is on his way to becoming the No. 1-selling DVD in UK history, the BBC is reporting today.
The boy wizard's first adventure has sold 861,000 copies on DVD, making it the second biggest-selling DVD ever in the UK and even having an impact on player sales, which saw a 280 percent jump in the week of the Harry Potter video release, BBC reported.
The film has sold almost 1.6 million copies since its May 11 release, helping the UK's total video sales in 2002 so far jump 31 percent compared with the same period in 2001. Figures provided by the British Video Association put UK video sales at 2,434,431 for Harry, 648,884 for distant second Moulin Rouge and 567,206 for Disney's Cinderella 2.
"With such fantastic sales so far, it will be fascinating to see whether further sales between now and Christmas help Harry challenge The Jungle Book and Titanic for title of bestselling video of all time," Lavinia Carey, director general of the British Video Association, told BBC.
Video sales in the UK are at their highest point for more than two years, the BBC report noted.
