Playboy Home Video Comes of Age

Playboy Home Video marks its 20th anniversary this year and is still stacking up hits, having launched three new successful product lines just last year: Playboy Exposed, Playboy TV and Playboy Erotic Movies.

“Playboy Home Video began at a time when the video sellthrough market was very small and completely dominated by theatrical titles,” said Barry Leshtz, SVP and general manager of Playboy Worldwide Home Video. “We brought new and exciting specialty programming to the public and we've been growing ever since. We achieved our first million-dollar sales month in January and 2002 is shaping up to be our biggest year ever.”

Formed in 1982, Playboy Home Video's very first video release achieved platinum sales status, according to a press release. Platinum-level sales again greeted its 1985 launch of a "Video Centerfold" line in 1985.

Playboy Home Video introduced fans to intimate and sensual video portraits of many celebrities, such as Farrah Fawcett, Anna Nicole Smith, Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson. The Best of Pamela Anderson spent 12 weeks at number one on Billboard's video sales chart and has become Playboy's best-selling home video to date.

According to a press release, Playboy Home Video has ranked in the Top 10 charts for video sellthrough for the past decade, and was ranked on Billboard's “The Year in Video” report as the No. 1 sales label in 1995, 1996 and 2000.
