Platinum Finds Rental Partner in MTI20 Jun, 2005 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Miami-based MTI Home Video has partnered with Platinum Disc to split rental and sellthrough distribution of eight direct-to-video action titles from producer Avi Lerner's Nu Image Pictures.
The MTI deal kicks off with the July 26 release of Raging Sharks ($24.95 DVD, $49.95 VHS, prebook July 7). The deal also includes the “Nature Unleashed”-branded titles Earthquake, Avalanche and Skeleton Man. Sharks revolves around an object from space that crashes in the Bermuda Triangle, launching sharks into a killing frenzy.
“We were looking for a strong rental partner in the retail market,” said Dave Thompson, founder and CEO of Platinum Disc. “[MTI co-founder Larry Brahms is] one of the best out there as far as [rental] reputation.”
After merging with Echo Bridge Entertainment, Platinum upped its catalog to include DTV and theatrical films. Thompson said the company needed “rental exposure.” In May, Platinum signed an agreement to distribute Hallmark's Hall of Fame TV miniseries titles, previously distributed by Lions Gate Home Entertainment.
