Panasonic Cutting Price of BD Player

15 May, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Panasonic is reducing the price of its Blu-ray Disc player by more than half by the end of May, an executive said at the Media-Tech Expo.

The BD 10 ($1,299) will be replaced by the BD 10A ($599), packaged with five movies — Transporter, Crash, the first two “Pirates of the Caribbean” films and Fantastic Four.

The new model features “cosmetic improvements,” said Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, VP of corporate development and GM, Blu-ray Disc Group, Panasonic North America. The unit includes 7.1 audio.

He said the company hopes to tilt the market in favor of Blu-ray.

“We hope this is something big,” he said. “We hope this does something. We're doing our part.”
