Panasonic to Bow Blu-ray Players in September29 Mar, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company has announced it would begin shipping its first Blu-ray Disc player, the DMP-BD10, in September. The player will retail below $1,500.
The move is designed to coincide with the launch of the company's first 1080p plasma television this fall, including a 103-inch flat screen with a reported $10,000 price tag.
The Blu-ray player would include an HDAVI control function enabling it to interface with multiple media devices.
"Our goal is to focus on the total solution for an uncompromised high definition experience,” said Reid Sullivan, VP of merchandising for Panasonic's entertainment group.
The announcement would appear to be an attempt by Panasonic to curry early attention to Blu-ray prior to Sony Corp.'s much-anticipated launch of PlayStation 3, which has a built-in Blu-ray player, in November.
