Overstock.com Gets Exclusive Distribution Rights to Counterdocumentary FahrenHYPE 9/1128 Sep, 2004 By: Holly J. Wagner
Overstock.com has acquired exclusive distribution rights to FahrenHYPE 9/11, a counterdocumentary to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, and will offer the titles side by side when they street Oct. 5.
FahrenHYPE 9/11 “aims to give a balanced, bipartisan perspective of the Iraq war and the dangers of the post-9/11 world,” said producer Jeff Hays. The film is narrated by actor Ron Silver and features Democrats such as former New York City Mayor Ed Koch and longtime Clinton adviser Dick Morris.
Overstock.com is fulfilling a limited number of orders from a handful of video rentailers and brick-and-mortar retailers to introduce the documentary to the public. Beyond that, the film will only be available for purchase at Overstock.com for the immediate future.
Overstock.com president Patrick Byrne said he views owning the distribution rights to the film as an opportunity to support a hometown filmmaker and the broader public purpose of an informed debate.
“Though they could not possibly have seen it, already there are some asserting that FahrenHYPE 9/11 must be a right-wing reaction to Mr. Moore's film,” he said. “It is not: It is a responsible documentary featuring Republicans and Democrats disputing Mr. Moore's claims. These two films make vivid the two opposing worldviews that dominate our mass culture, and I think the polity is served by having both films available to it.”
The FahrenHYPE 9/11 DVD is available for preorder at Overstock.com for $14.99. A companion book is available for $11.99, and the DVD/book combo is available for $24.99. Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 is offered for preorder for $21.89. Since Overstock.com controls FahrenHYPE 9/11 distribution, it may be shipping to consumers sooner, as inventory becomes available.
