NPD: April Game Sales Up 20%21 May, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Spurred by ongoing strong sales of Nintendo Co.'s Wii video game system, sales of game hardware in April increased 20% to $839 million, compared to the same period last year, according to new data from The NPD Group.
A dearth of new titles resulted in a 1% decline in software sales to $390 million, compared to last year. Overall hardware and software games sales increased slightly from $1.1 billion in March.
Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD said Nintendo sold 360,000 Wii units in April to lead the industry for the fourth consecutive month. By comparison, sales of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 with Blu-ray dropped 37% from March figures to 82,000 units.
