Nominees Announced for First-Ever TV DVD Awards

20 Sep, 2004 By: Stephanie Prange

Three dozen TV DVDs, mostly “complete season” sets, have been nominated for the first-ever TV DVD Awards by a panel of DVD critics.

The nominees, three for each of the 12 categories, will now undergo a public vote to determine the winners, which will be announced Oct. 19 during the second annual TV DVD Conference in Century City, Calif.

The public may vote on Video Store Magazine's Web site, www.hive4media.com, or on the TV Shows on DVD Web site at www.tvshowsondvd.com.

The conference and the awards are produced by Video Store Magazine in cooperation with DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group and The Hollywood Reporter.

Nominees were selected from a field of more than 150 entries submitted by the studios and independent suppliers that offer TV DVD product. All TV DVD titles released in the United States between Sept. 1, 2003 and Aug. 31, 2004 were eligible.

The panel of judges, which includes USA Today's Mike Snider, veteran home video journalist Bruce Apar and prominent online critics Bill Hunt, Gord Lacey and Geoffrey Kleinman, selected nominees based on the DVD treatment rather than the quality of the TV show.

Factors included packaging, ease of navigation, menu design, special features and audio-video transfer quality.

“TV DVD has become such an important new business that we felt an awards contest could be an important awareness tool to help consumers wade through the barrage of product they're seeing in stores,” said Thomas K. Arnold, executive producer of the TV DVD Conference and Video Store Magazine's associate publisher and group editor.

“The quality of TV DVD has gone up tremendously since the business began taking off a couple of years ago,” added Video Store Magazine publisher Don Rosenberg. “The bar for special features and extra content, in particular, is constantly being raised. This contest allows us to recognize the best of the best.”
