Newell Takes Helm at UrbanWorks20 Jun, 2005 By: Erik Gruenwedel
As expected, Ventura Entertainment has upped Quincy Newell to the position of SVP and GM of business unit UrbanWorks Entertainment. Newell, who was VP in charge of day-to-day operations, sales, product development and marketing, will now be responsible for financial management, acquisitions and overall production duties at UrbanWorks.
Although surprised by Jeff Clanagan's abrupt departure earlier this month to head a separate business venture aligned with Universal Music Group, Newell said in the short term it would be business as usual.
“Jeff and I were very aligned in how we approached [DVD] releases, so I think the direction we are heading with inspirational and gospel plays, ‘The Cosby Show,' the ‘Fat Albert' animated series, ‘A Different World' and ‘Platinum Comedy Series,' will continue to be our track,” said Newell.
With a strong music industry background that included executive positions with Blackground Records and Rhino Entertainment, it's not surprising Newell is eyeing for next year a music DVD series featuring live performances from comedian Sinbad's Soul Music Festival.
Initial UrbanWorks' branded music DVD, include soul artists Rolls Royce and Zap and Roger.
“We are going to try and move more into performance content,” Newell said. “Urban music is the No. 1 genre in the world and [urban-themed music DVD] is definitely a niche that is growing.”
