New Subscription VOD Service on Tap4 Dec, 2002 By: Hive News
RealNetworks Inc. and Starz Encore Group announced a new subscription video-on-demand service during a press conference this morning at the Broadband Plus Show in Anaheim, Calif. The new service is set to launch in the spring of 2003.
The service will be called Starz On Demand on RealOne and will offer more than 100 “unique” movie titles per month via RealNetworks' RealOne platform and subscription model. No subscription price has been announced.
Subscribers can select movies to download to their PCs for on-demand presentation through the RealOne Player. The schedule of movies for Starz On Demand will be similar to movies offered via Starz On Demand on digital cable, which currently include The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor and others, the companies said. Starz on Demand on RealOne will also be available to consumers who are subscribers to the Starz Super Pak of regularly scheduled premium movie channels on cable or satellite.
Movies will be encoded in RealVideo 9. Consumers use the RealOne Player to watch the movie in full-screen mode and will have full player controls to rewind, fast-forward and pause the film.
“With our emphasis on theatrical movies, now all on demand for a low monthly fee, this service will fuel the growth of broadband, particularly cable modem sales,” said John J. Sie, founder and chairman of Starz Encore Group.
Starz on Demand on RealOne will join Movielink and NetMovies in the online VOD business.
