New Line Home Entertainment has scored a long-term development, production and distribution deal with best-selling novelist Danielle Steel to turn her romance novels into direct-to-video movies.

New Line Home Entertainment gets the rights to develop and produce feature length films based upon more than 30 existing novels and all future novels. The first project is yet to be identified, but a 2006 start-of-production is expected.

“Danielle Steel is one of the world's great literary brands, and New Line Home Entertainment is proud to be in business with such a cultural icon,” said Kevin Kasha, NLHE's SVP of acquisitions and programming. “Her books have enjoyed unparalleled popular success, and this partnership is certain to yield films that will excite her existing fans and capture many new ones.”

Steel, on a book tour, quipped that she was starting a new book the day the deal was announced.

“New Line Home Entertainment has an outstanding track record in creating and introducing new and exciting feature film franchises," she said. "I have found the perfect home for the film adaptations of my novels.”
