New DVD Game Due in October22 Sep, 2004 By: Holly J. Wagner
A new DVD-based interactive game due Oct. 8 purports to let players use their DVD players as video game consoles.
The game joins Screenlife's “Scene It?” series of games and Hasbro's Trivial Pursuit DVD edition on a growing field of games that incorporate DVDs.
Developed by California-based DVD Interactive and published by Digital Leisure of Ontario, Canada, Are You All That? ($19.95) is billed as a “hip-hop-meets-flower-power trivia game” built on the idea that everyone is “all that” (a self-proclaimed expert) about something. Each of four contestants get to play in character as a pop culture icon from an era between the 1960s and the 1990s.
Host Dr. Know-It-All-Browne challenges players in a retro game show format and “disses” or “gives props” based on individual performance. The game is for up to four players and features 1,500 questions in six categories.
Randomly selected Are You All That? trivia questions include a mix of timeless factoids, nostalgia, contemporary tidbits and pop culture. Every question answered correctly proves a player has got the stuff, the juice, that makes him or her “all that.”
The only equipment needed to play is a DVD player with a remote control. The game is also compatible with PlayStation2 and Xbox DVD consoles and PC DVD players.
