Spurred by 5.6 million net subscriber additions worldwide, Netflix Jan. 19 reported a total subscriber base of 75 million — including 44.7 million in the United States — at the end of the fourth quarter (Dec. 31). Netflix tallied 57.3 million members globally during the previous-year period. The streaming video pioneer missed its domestic subscriber growth projection by 90,000.
HBO is planning to launch standalone streaming service in Spain by the end of the year that would not require a separate pay-TV subscription. The deal is noteworthy as HBO would limit first-run programming to the new streaming service as third-party pay-TV license deals expire.
The Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) and Motion Pictures Laboratories, Inc. (MovieLabs) Jan. 19 released the Media Manifest Delivery Core specification to simplify delivery of movie and TV media assets to digital retailers.
