Netflix Offers Free Rental If Shipments Delayed

By Erik Gruenwedel | Posted: 30 Dec 2008

Netflix said it would begin sending its 8.7 million subscribers free titles from their rental queues if a previous title is delayed due to shipment from a more distant distribution center.

The Los Gatos, Calif.-based online DVD rental pioneer, which has 55 shipping centers nationwide, including Alaska and Hawaii, initiated the policy after noting delayed subscriber deliveries of titles not available locally.

“This was especially inconvenient for our members on one-disc plans,” Netflix said in an email to subscribers. “We want you to receive DVDs as quickly as possible, so we’re taking this extra step to ensure you have another movie to enjoy as a complimentary extra DVD rental if your first choice will be delayed.”

with no drop in next months fee, how does the free rental work in to the monthly charge. no matter how you look at it, if you pay for one at a time, one at a time is all you get, so again how does the free movie rental work in? do they give you a cupon for a free rental at blockbuster or hollywood? does any see just how stupid this is? oh net flex is giving out free rentals from your movie list that you picked out, but you still have to pay full price for the monthly service fee.

I think what they mean is that if you are on the 3-at-a-time plan they will temporarily bump you up to the 4-at-a-time plan when one of the titles is delayed. Then presumably you would have to return two your DVDs before you get a new one sent out (bringing out back down to your original 3-at-a-time).
