Netflix Celebrates the Oscars

1 Feb, 2007 By: Jessica Wolf

Netflix is gearing up for the Academy Awards with a new promotional piece themed to Hollywood's biggest night.

An Oscar-themed graphic on users' home pages touts the Feb. 25 broadcast. Clicking on it opens up another page design that features famous movie quotes from past Oscar winners floating in the background behind an image of the iconic Oscar statuette.

Moving the mouse over the notable quotes brings up a pop-up window with box art and information on the movie from which it came. For example, hover over the phrase "Attica! Attica!" and a dialogue box with information and art for Dog Day Afternoon pops up. Clicking on the phrase leads to the full Netflix page for the selected Oscar movie.

Netflix has even designed the phrase with fonts that are evocative of the respective movies.

Executives from online rental leader have often said one way Netflix will continue to set itself apart from competition such as Blockbuster Online, is in part through its unique community-building site features and deep connections to its base of film lovers.
