Netflix, Best Buy Bask in Oscars' Glow

Two of the industry's biggest players — Netflix and Best Buy — have joined with Entertainment Weekly magazine and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to present an Oscar pool with prizes that include a lifetime Netflix subscription and a trip to the 2007 Oscars presentation.

The pool, at Oscar.com, launched the day after the 2005 Academy Award nominations were announced. Film enthusiasts can register to participate in the pool and play by completing an online ballot with their predictions in 24 award categories. Players can compete as individuals or in teams and can log in and change their predictions as many times as they like prior to the start of the broadcast of the Academy Awards at 5 p.m. PST March 5.

In conjunction with the pool, Entertainment Weekly will publish a 24-page Ultimate Guide to the Oscars that will be distributed free at Best Buy stores nationwide. The mini-magazine will include the full facsimile ballot similar to the one on the Web site, as well as items about each of the nominees in several of the award categories.

The entrant with the most correct predictions will receive a grand prize of an all-expenses-paid weekend in Hollywood with seats on the red carpet of the Oscars 2007, a lifetime membership to Netflix and an Entertainment Weekly subscription. Additional prizes will be awarded to runners up.
