Netflix Accidentally Reveals 'The Painted Veil'30 Jan, 2007 By: Jessica Wolf
Netflix accidentally unveiled advance DVD copies of the upcoming period film The Painted Veil to a handful of subscribers this week.
Thanks to a “minor delivery issue” — one that has already been remedied, according to a Netflix spokesperson — a small, undisclosed number of Netflix renters got a copy of the Warner-distributed flick, which has yet to launch into wide theatrical release.
The discs were award-viewing screeners intended for members of Film Independent, the Santa Monica-based nonprofit group that sponsors the annual Spirit Awards, that's turned into a high profile event honoring independently produced films.
The group has been working with Netflix for screener distribution to its members for three years now.
The screener program is going forward, a Netflix spokesperson said. The Painted Veil, starring Edward Norton and Naomi Watts, is based on the W. Somerset Maugham novel of the same title. It is distributed via Warner Independent Pictures and is currently only in theaters in Los Angeles and New York.
Netflix has a “save feature” that allows users to queue up movies that have not been released yet.
