Netflix: 5M Video Streams in 6 Months

10 Jul, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Netflix Inc. July 10 said subscribers have watched 5 million movies and TV episodes on their PCs since the online DVD rental pioneer launched its “instant watching” streaming service in January.

Most popular streams include “The Office,” The Matrix, The Prince & Me, Super Size Me, The Sum of All Fears, Jackass: The Movie and Sherrybaby.

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix offers subscribers access to about 2,000 titles via online streams, and 80,000 titles on DVD.

Subscribers have access to various amounts of streaming time based on their DVD rental plan. For example, the one-movie-at-time plan ($4.99 per month) allows for five hours of streaming and the three-movie plan ($17.99) grants 18 hours.

Streaming time is based on the minute, not title watched.

Netflix said it plans to offer 5,000 titles for streaming by the end of the year.
