Characterizing next year's broadcast transmission switch to digital a watershed moment for broadcasters, David Rehr, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, said the trade group is working to help bring digital TV to a variety of portable devices, including the iPod, iPhone and laptops.

During opening remarks at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, Rehr said broadcast television could earn an estimated additional $2 billion a year in revenue by 2012 from new and repurposed content via mobile video.

“That's live TV on upwards of 345 million devices,” Rehr told attendees.

To achieve this, Rehr said NAB was working with industry professionals and manufacturers to help establish an open broadcast standard for mobile devices.
