MTV Has the Urge15 May, 2006 By: Jessica Wolf
MTV Networks is finally getting into the music downloading business with the launch of Urge.
The Beta site goes live Wednesday, May 17, and will have 2 million tracks available for download, with pricing comparable to Apple's iTunes — $0.99 per track or $9.95 per album.
Unlike iTunes, which doesn't offer a subscription plan for music and which only works with proprietary Apple iPod hardware, URGE will offer unlimited downloads for $9.95 or $14.95 per month. The higher-priced option comes with rights to transfer songs to any of 100 compatible portable music players.
The site will use the newest version of Microsoft's Windows Media Player.
For now, the site will also stream video content, and video downloads will become available later.
