MTI Home Video Catches Asian Fever25 Apr, 2005 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Following the successful 2003 DVD release of Japanese thriller Another Heaven and subsequent market demand for Asian fare, Miami-based MTI Home Video has launched stand-alone label Saiko (pronounced “psycho”) Films.
Saiko's initial release, Kibakichi ($24.95 DVD), streeting June 28 (prebook June 9) features the requisite ingredients of Asian period films, including swordplay, intense action sequences, beautiful women and special effects.
MTI plans to release at least five more titles quarterly through Saiko. MTI president Larry Brahms said the rise in demand for Asian horror and action films necessitated more than just a few releases.
“We needed a mentality to go along with it,” he said.
“This movie [Kibakichi] is everything you ever imagined it could possibly be,” he said. “It is a horror film, a monster movie, a werewolf movie, and it's got music to die for.”
Brahms said some of the subsequent Saiko releases will feature anime scenes, but he has no plans to launch an anime unit.
“Other companies are doing [anime] very successfully, and I really don't see a reason to go after a market that is already designated,” Brahms said.
