MPEG LA Licenses Technology to Seven Replicators

11 Mar, 2008 By: Chris Tribbey

MPEG LA, which licenses the MPEG-2 digital video compression technology used on DVDs, has agreed to license the technology to seven replicators following the conclusion of patent-enforcement actions in German courts.

Three German replicators and one in Denmark are being sued for copyright infringement.

Replicators in Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom will now be allowed to use MPEG-2.

“We are pleased to welcome these seven DVD video disc replicators as licensees to the MPEG-2 patent portfolio license,” MPEG LA CEO Larry Horn said. “They join more than 1,300 other companies as licensees, including the world's leading DVD video disc manufacturers responsible for most DVD video discs produced in the current world market.”
