MPAA Unveils Copy-Protection Icon

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has created an industry Copy Protection Awareness Icon available for voluntary inclusion on DVD packaging to let consumers know if they are buying or renting a copy-protected disc. The icon is intended for incorporation into DVD artwork with the existing informational logos for other technical specifications.

“The icon is a step to increase consumer awareness and does not indicate that there has been a change to the existing DVD copy-protection mechanism or in the manner a consumer can view a DVD,” according to an MPAA statement.

The icon will begin to appear on participating MPAA member company DVD new releases this month in the United States, followed by international markets later in the year. It also has been made available for use by non-MPAA members.
