Movielink on the Move

9 Nov, 2005 By: Holly J. Wagner

Movielink is on the move, revealing customer trends, luring new users with a promotion on cereal boxes and holding its own in a patent lawsuit.

Among the trends disclosed as the movie download service reaches its third anniversary:

  • Movielink customers have rented more movies starring Angelina Jolie and Jude Law than any other actors. Jolie slightly edged out Law in the popularity category with 32,700 downloads while movies featuring Law have generated 32,500 rentals.

  • The greatest concentration of customers is in Brooklyn; the most common zip code in Movielink's database of users is 11219.

  • Movielink's top customer is from Greenwell Springs, La., and has rented more than 720 films in the past three years.

  • A majority of respondents in a Movielink-conducted user profile survey said the living or family room is their favorite place to watch Movielink movies.

  • The service hopes to gain popularity with a promotion on some General Mills cereal boxes.

Through February 2006, $5 Movielink movie download coupons will be offered on millions of specially marked boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Golden Grahams.

Finally, the company has fended off a patent challenge by USA Video Technology Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of USA Video Interactive Corp. But round two may be pending: The company is appealing a District Court decision that let Movielink out of the case.
