Movie Gallery Inks Stadium Deal14 May, 2003 By: Joan Villa
The nation's third largest video rental chain will become a little more visible thanks to a 20-year, $5 million partnership with Alabama's Troy State University that will rename the campus's newly renovated football stadium Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium.
“The Troy State University system is located in the heart of our home market and has provided many outstanding employees to the Movie Gallery team,” observed CEO Joe Malugen in announcing the marketing deal. "Through this relationship, we are supporting this important local institution and, at the same time, increasing our brand awareness through significant marketing and media."
The agreement also covers two four-year academic scholarships from Movie Gallery each year to students in the Troy State system, which includes campuses in the retailer's home town of Dothan, Ala. Movie Gallery currently operates 1,855 stores in 44 states and Canada.
When the new name takes effect in September, Troy State will be the fourth Division I-A stadium with corporate sponsorship, joining Syracuse (Carrier Dome), Louisville (Papa John's Stadium) and Texas Tech (SBC Stadium).
The renovation will add an artificial playing surface, a large-screen video display, new lighting and about 12,500 seats to boost total capacity to about 30,000, the retailer added.
