Mounties Bust DVD Pirate Ring

21 Dec, 2007 By: John Latchem

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Dec. 18 arrested eight people suspected of selling bootleg DVDs of popular TV shows, passing them off as genuine, according to the Montreal Gazette.

The RCMP carried out two search warrants in Montreal, seizing 200 DVD burners and copies of shows such as “The Six Million Dollar Man” and “Who's the Boss?”

According to reports, the bootleggers were pumping out nearly 14,000 DVDs a day. During a four-day period, investigators intercepted 5,000 illegal DVDs that already had been shipped.

The operation advertised its products on legitimate Web sites but had been under investigation since February after several American buyers complained about the poor quality of the DVDs.
