Mobile Viewing on the Rise20 Jun, 2006 By: John Latchem
The ability to watch video on mobile phones is on the rise, if shipping totals for cell phone displays are any indication.
The NPD Group's DisplaySearch found shipments of mobile phone main displays were up 44% in the first quarter of 2006. Samsung shipped the most displays, with 16.7% of the market share.
Sharp introduced the first VGA resolution display phone, a 2.4-inch diagonal device with 333 ppi, the highest-density commercial display ever. Samsung announced it also would have a VGA-based phone.
“The mobile phone display market continues to grow, paced by the higher-end displays of two inches and above,” said DisplaySearch SVP Barry Young. “The battle for the high-end mobile TV market is heating up.”
