Hollywood razzle-dazzle wasted no time jumping from the Academy Awards into video stores as best picture winner Chicago dances onto VHS and two-disc DVD Aug. 19.
The musical, starring Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger, also won best supporting actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones and four other Oscars at Hollywood ceremonies last night. The title will be priced at $29.99 on DVD and $24.99 on VHS; prebook is July 8 through distribution and June 24 for direct accounts.
Miramax, releasing through Buena Vista Home Entertainment, has not officially finalized bonus features for the two-disc set, but initial reports are that song-and-dance scenes cut from the film may be included along with audio commentary and other featurettes.
Miramax's Gangs of New York was also announced for VHS ($24.99) and two-disc DVD ($29.99) release July 1, prebooking May 6 for direct accounts and May 20 for distribution. In one of the surprises of the evening, director Martin Scorsese's epic tale of struggle between Irish immigrants in New York in the 1860s was nominated for 10 awards but won none.
Also getting the two-disc DVD treatment from Buena Vista June 10 will be Frida, the tale of fiery Mexican artist Frida Kahlo that took home two statuettes for makeup and original score. The DVD is $19.99 and VHS will be priced for rental and prebook April 29 for distribution and April 15 for direct accounts.
