Microsoft Corp. announced Jan. 3 that it had sold 4.3 million Xbox 360s during the fourth quarter of 2007, largely thanks to big-time games such as Halo 3 and Mass Effect. Those sales bring the total number of Xbox 360s to nearly 18 million.
“Holiday 2007 was a blockbuster season for the gaming industry,” Microsoft said in a news release.
Before the holiday sales surge, Xbox Live had more than 8 million members, many of whom were paying $50 a year for the premium service that lets them play online against others.
The company added that 8.1 million copies of Halo 3, the latest installment of the sci-fi shooting game, had been sold by the end of the year.The company did not release figures on how many HD DVD add-ons had been sold by the end of the year.
