MGM Takes Back Canadian Distribution

30 Oct, 2002 By: Hive News

Expanding its self-distribution operations, MGM Home Entertainment announced today that it will assume all Canadian distribution responsibilities for VHS and DVD -- a role previously handled by Warner Home Video.

The extension of distribution operations augments MGM's presence in the Canadian marketplace, which for years has included theatrical and television production and distribution activities. The company recently exercised its option to reclaim self-distribution efforts in Germany and France as well.

“We are extremely pleased to expand our distribution operations in Canada, which is such an important market," said David Bishop, president and COO, MGM Home Entertainment Group. "We look forward to building a strong foundation with the Canadian retail base and in providing them with the same outstanding service that we have worked diligently to deliver to our retailers in the U.S. and the U.K."

MGM Home Entertainment Group will initiate its Canadian self-distribution operations with the launch of products streeting next April. A 14-member work force, including sales, retail marketing and customer service, will manage the region from the new Toronto office, led by Martin Wragg, who has been promoted from director of East Coast sales to VP of sales for Canada. With distribution to be handled through Toronto-based Cinram, the sales force will sell directly to trade outlets on Jan. 1 for April street titles.

Wragg's tenure at MGM spans seven years. He has served as a sales representative in the United States and United Kingdom, including Ireland. Prior to working in the home entertainment industry, he worked for various packaged goods companies. Wragg will continue to report directly to Robert Wittenberg, EVP of Worldwide Sales.

"Martin has played a vital role within MGM's Home Entertainment Group," said Wittenberg. "Over the last several years, he has done an exceptional job in helping drive the retail success of our DVD and video products in the east coast marketplace, and we expect that he will continue to do so as his role expands into Canada."

Blake Thomas, EVP of Worldwide Marketing based at the company's Santa Monica headquarters, will continue to supervise MGM's day-to-day Canadian marketing operations.
