‘Wedding Crashers' Crack Open 'Fifth Quarter'26 Sep, 2005 By: Thomas K. Arnold
New Line Home Entertainment has given the “fifth quarter” a jump-start by announcing Wedding Crashers, the year's fourth-highest-grossing movie ($203.6 million) for arrival Jan. 3, 2006 (prebook Nov. 22).
The news comes at a time when most suppliers are pushing out summer movies and other high-profile titles before Christmas in the hopes of maximizing the fourth quarter, when the video industry generates about 40 percent of its yearly revenue.
Of the 33 films that grossed at least $25 million theatrically between Memorial Day and Labor Day, 28 are coming to DVD before the end of the year. A 29th film, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, will likely arrive in stores before Christmas as well, sources said.
Last year, according to The DVD Release Report, 26 of the 33 films that generated more than $25 million in theaters during that same time frame came to video before the end of the year, while seven were held for early 2005 to capitalize on new DVD households.
Wedding Crashers is coming to DVD in both an ‘R'-rated and an unrated, “Uncorked” edition. Special features include commentaries, deleted scenes, a game and several featurettes. The “Uncorked” edition also will include nine extra minutes of footage and test audience reactions to certain scenes.
Both versions of the DVD and the UMD (“Uncorked” version only) will retail for $28.98, with VHS priced for rental.
