‘Poseidon' Sinks to Second on Sellers Chart30 Aug, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Pity Poseidon. The big-budget film that sank in theaters just as quickly failed to take the top spot on the national DVD sales chart its first week in stores. The disaster flick lost out to Sony Pictures' Silent Hill, a video-game-turned-horror-film that that generated less than $47 million at the box office.
The Warner video release did manage a first-place finish on the video rental chart for the week ended Aug. 27, bumping Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Inside Man to the No. 2 spot after two weeks as the rental champ.
On VideoScan's First Alert sales chart for the same week, Poseidon finished second, ahead of last week's chart topper, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's RV, which is still selling strong after two weeks in stores.
20th Century Fox's Just My Luck, the critically panned Lindsay Lohan comedy that grossed a paltry $17.3 million in theaters, was the only other new theatrical release out on DVD. The film debuted at No. 5 on First Alert and No. 6 on Home Media Retailing's video rental chart, with rental earnings of $5.9 million.
Poseidon earned $8.4 million in rental stores, while Inside Man generated another $7.4 million to bring its total rental take, after three weeks in stores, to $25.9 million, or nearly 30% of its $88.5 million theatrical gross.
Silent Hill bowed at No. 3 on the rental chart, with earnings pegged at $7.3 million.
