‘Hockey Gladiators' Make a Goal of DVD

17 Aug, 2004 By: Dan Bennett

Rarely has the advice been more appropriate: Don't try this at home.Of course, since most people don't have an ice rink in their living room, it wouldn't be that easy.

Hockey Gladiators is a much-anticipated, two-day event scheduled for Aug. 20-21 in Winnipeg, Canada. Former and current professional hockey players will square off at center ice, dropping the gloves and duking it out for 90 seconds. After 60 such bouts, the last man standing will be crowned the Champion Hockey Gladiator and take home $100,000.

The pay-per-view event will then be turned into a fully loaded DVD, due in October from Velocity Home Entertainment.

On the bill are former National Hockey League players Frank “The Animal” Bialowas, John “The Reverend” Craighead and Kent Carlson. One of the judges is Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, who still holds the NHL record for most penalty minutes in a single season.

“When I met the guys in Velocity, I knew they were the ones to handle this,” said Hockey Gladiators founder and president Darryl “Beef” Wolski. “They've got Cana-dian blood, so they get the hockey, they get the fighting. Plus they've got North American distribution.”

The DVD is expected to attract fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championships and other such anything-goes bouts. Gladiators extras include training footage.

David Rand, president of Velocity Home Entertainment, said, “This is one of the most talked-about events to occur in years, with unprecedented buzz and publicity,” Rand said. For more information, go to www.hockeygladiators.com.
