‘Get Shorty' DVD Gets Ride From Box Office Sequel1 Nov, 2004 By: Brendan Howard
In a cross-promotional approach that's fast becoming the norm, the collector's edition DVD of the 1995 John Travolta starrer Get Shorty is piggybacking on its sequel's theatrical release in 2005.
A two-DVD collector's set from MGM Home Entertainment streets Feb. 22 (prebook Jan. 11), just 10 days before the sequel, Be Cool, shows up in theaters. The set will offer a free movie ticket to Be Cool.
Get Shorty was released as a vanilla DVD in 2003.
Non-ticket extras in the set ($29.98) are slated to include a new high-definition transfer of the film, feature-length audio commentary by director Barry Sonnenfeld, three new featurettes, a deleted scene (featuring a young Ben Stiller, who otherwise doesn't appear in the film), outtakes, a wrap party reel, a making-of special, a photo gallery, four Easter eggs, the trailer, an eight-page insert on the making of the film, and a sneak peek at Be Cool, which will premiere in theaters March 4.
Get Shorty starred Travolta as loan shark Chili Palmer, who ends up bringing his strong-arm ways to new work as a film producer after he tries to collect a loan from a Hollywood native. The sequel sees the return of Travolta, Danny DeVito and James Gandolfini from the original in a tale in which Palmer gets involved in the music industry.
