Lionsgate Cuts Deal With Bernie Mac24 Aug, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Lionsgate appears to be looking to replicate its success with Tyler Perry (Madea's Family Reunion) with a first-look deal with actor/comedian Bernie Mac and his nascent production company MacMan Entertainment.
Under terms of the first-ever deal between Lionsgate and an actor's production company, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based mini-major would distribute on DVD at least four original Dean Martin-style celebrity roasts hosted by Mac (“The Bernie Mac Show,” Mr. 3,000). The studio also would distribute theatrically Mac's first concert film since The Original Kings of Comedy.
In a related matter, Mac just finished production on Pride, a fact-based drama starring Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard and distributed by Lionsgate.
