'Kong' Is King on DVD3 Apr, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold
First-week sales of 6.5 million King Kong DVDs set a new record for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, the studio reported April 3.
The tally equates to more than $100 million in consumer spending, which comes on top of a worldwide box office gross of $550 million.
Calling the film “one of Universal's biggest and most successful cinematic triumphs ever,” Universal Studios Home Entertainment president Craig Kornblau noted King Kong has sold more DVDs its first six days in stores than any other film in the studio's history.
King Kong is the No. 2 seller of the first quarter of 2006, topped only by Warner Home Video's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which posted first-day sales of 5 million DVDs and went on to sell nearly 9 million DVDs its first six days in stores.
