Kevin Smith Sponsors Virgin Mobile Contest

20 Nov, 2006 By: Jessica Wolf

Irreverent director Kevin Smith is getting into the YouTube phenomenon with Virgin Mobile.

As Smith's Clerks II DVD hits stores Nov. 28, the writer-director is working with Virgin Mobile USA and user-generated video powerhouse YouTube.com to promote Virgin's “Bleepin' Awesome” award contest.

Smith sent out a video to Virgin Mobile users, urging them to send in entries to Virgin's contest, which asks them to create and submit videos on YouTube.com that showcases someone or something transformed from the ordinary to the “bleeping awesome,” all while incorporating the Virgin Mobile brand.

Smith will offer commentary on submitted videos and pick his personal favorite. YouTube visitors will be able to vote on the entries from Dec. 6 through Dec. 10. The video creators get points from a panel of judges for originality, appropriateness to theme and representation of the Virgin Mobile brand. Judging and user votes will be combined to determine the winners.

The grand prize is a New Year's Eve trip for two to New York City, where the winning video will be shown on an animated billboard in Times Square.

Kevin Smith was the perfect face to put on the contest, said Howard Handler, chief marketing officer for Virgin Mobile.

“He represents everything provocative and irreverent about what it means to be bleeping awesome,” Handler said in announcing the contest. “We look forward to the aspiring filmmakers who follow Kevin's lead and submit videos.”
